In the heart of the Corbières,
set amid charming surroundings, the Abbey rises
between pines and cypresses, olive trees and vines.
The abbey is situated on the banks of the
River Orbieu, linked to the village of Lagrasse by the Pont-Vieux.
The abbey is divided into
two distinct parts. The religious, Canons Regular of the Mother of God, are
endeavouring to breathe life back into the conventual buildings (two thirds
of the site).
They are happy to welcome visitors. Entry is via the grand gate which opens
into the main 18th century courtyard in all its noble simplicity.
The massive doors of the 18th
century Gothic abbatial church are once again open for public prayer.
The visitor will be immediately
struck by the famous grand cloister in rose sandstone.
Solemn and recollected, silent and inviting.
Its vaulted ceiling once again
resounds to the echoes of Gregorian chant.
The monumental tower is situated
at the south of the main building, dominating the charming 11th century Roman
apses.
At their foot, the Canons
are preparing a mediaeval garden with its vegetables and flowers, and a maze
rich in symbolism.
