St Mary's Abbey, Lagrasse, founded by Charlemagne,
represents a unique historic and religious heritage

In the heart of the Corbières,
set amid charming surroundings, the Abbey rises
between pines and cypresses, olive trees and vines.

General view of the abbey

The abbey tower and Pont-Vieux

The abbey is situated on the banks of the River Orbieu, linked to the village of Lagrasse by the Pont-Vieux.

The abbey is divided into two distinct parts. The religious, Canons Regular of the Mother of God, are endeavouring to breathe life back into the conventual buildings (two thirds of the site).

They are happy to welcome visitors. Entry is via the grand gate which opens into the main 18th century courtyard in all its noble simplicity.

The massive doors of the 18th century Gothic abbatial church are once again open for public prayer.

Grand cloister of the abbey

The visitor will be immediately struck by the famous grand cloister in rose sandstone.

Solemn and recollected, silent and inviting.

A moment of silence

Its vaulted ceiling once again resounds to the echoes of Gregorian chant.

The monumental tower is situated at the south of the main building, dominating the charming 11th century Roman apses.

At their foot, the Canons are preparing a mediaeval garden with its vegetables and flowers, and a maze rich in symbolism.

Finally, a lapidary museum will soon permit visitors to admire the most ancient vestiges of the stonework, including a 6th century Visigoth sarcophagus and pieces by Maître de Cabestany...
